KIRKSVILLE, MO --
The ice is officially broken.
Two end loaders literally broke the ice at Forest Lake Friday to get ready for the 5th Annual Polar Bear Plunge.
Last year it was about 40 degrees outside, so they didn't have to worry about ice. Unfortunately for all those taking the plunge, that isn't the case this year. The ice was about 12 inches thick, but don't let that stop you from taking part in the icy thrill.
“Come out and plunge, it's a good cause. All the money raised supports Special Olympics, especially the athletes in the northeast area of Missouri, so come on out, get in the lake with us have a little fun. There's not much else to do on a Saturday in February anyway,” said Tom Johnson, Committee member.
Registration starts Saturday at noon and the plunge starts at 2 p.m.
The Frostbite Run through Thousand Hills State Park starts at 10 a.m. Registration for that is at 9 a.m.
