KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- It's the dead of winter and that means snow and ice are likely each day.

We went to the Kirksville Police Department to get some tips for staying safe on the roads this winter.

It's against the law to drive with anything blocking your line of sight.  Many officers say it's one of their pet peeves and you can get a ticket or warning.

“I call it the tank commander syndrome because you just cut, or scrape out a little slit in your window and you try to look through that.  It might work ok when you're driving a multi-ton tank if you're driving a regular car it's a disaster waiting to happen,” said Kirksville Police Chief Jim Hughes.

Hughes says to always check the forecast and add extra time to your routine to clear snow and ice from your vehicle.  He says even 10 to 15 minutes could make a big difference.

“I urge everybody to assume that other drivers aren’t as conscientious as you are and that car coming up on the ice at that stop sign is not gonna be able to stop, the car that’s turning in front of you is not going to make a proper turn,” said Hughes.
