Southeast Iowa men sentenced on drug charges

WASHINGTON,IOWA -- On January 15, 2010, Mark Louis Young, age 43, of Washington, Iowa was sentenced by United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey to 135 months imprisonment for conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, and a concurrent 120 months imprisonment for endangering human life while manufacturing methamphetamine, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas A.Klinefeldt.

After his release from prison, Young was ordered to serve five years of supervised release on the conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine charge and a concurrent three years of supervised release on the endangering human life charge. Young was ordered to pay $100 per count to the Crime Victims Fund. Young was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $5,253.16 for clandestine lab cleanup costs. There is no parole in the federal system.

As part of an investigation, on November 28, 2008, law enforcement agents performed a search of two locations in Washington, Iowa. Law enforcement agents seized numerous items consistent with manufacturing methamphetamine at both locations. One of these locations was Young’s residence, where he lived along with his wife and two minor children.

After being advised of his rights, Young gave a statement to law enforcement admitting manufacturing methamphetamine at both locations since the fall of 2007. Specifically, Young admitted cooking methamphetamine at his residence and creating a substantial risk to the life of others residing there. Agents seized a total of approximately 1111 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine.

On January 15, 2010, Darnell Oneal Gist, age 33, of Washington, Iowa was sentenced by United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey to 78 months imprisonment for conspiracy to distribute at least five grams of cocaine base, also known as crack cocaine, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. Additionally, Gist was ordered to serve four years of supervised release and ordered to pay an assessment of $100 to the Crime Victims Fund. There is no parole in the federal system.

Gist admitted that beginning in November 2007 and continuing until February 10, 2009, he entered into an agreement to distribute at least five grams of crack cocaine. Gist admitted that as part of this conspiracy he distributed quantities of crack cocaine. Gist admitted that on February 10, 2009, he provided money to co-defendant Johnny Shaw for the purpose of traveling to and purchasing crack cocaine from Chicago. Coming back from Chicago, Shaw was stopped for a traffic violation and found to be in possession of approximately 18 grams of crack cocaine.
