Some Missouri lawmakers are hoping to clean up state ethics. Bills have been filed in conjunction with the Missouri Ethics Commission to make the state ethics rules stricter. One proposal would limit how much can be donated to political campaigns.
Three years ago the cap for the Missouri House election was $325 dollars per contribution. One local legislator says Missouri ethics have gone lax in the last several years, and now there is no limit.
“I would support reinstituting limits in order to level the playing field and take away the potential that large sums of money could have undue influence on a legislator's decision making,” said State Representative Rebecca McClanahan.
McClanahan says the new proposals could cut out loopholes, like contributions made from one committee to another. Another ethics proposal would stop lawmakers from becoming lobbyists.
