DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- An Iowa mom-to-be is expected to be fine after a snowplow-escort to the hospital during this week's blizzard.

Twenty-three-year-old Sierra Van Ersvelde, of Grinnell, is pregnant with her second child. She started having contractions Tuesday night. They were so strong she couldn't stand up.

An ambulance took her to a Grinnell hospital, but because she has a rare blood condition, officials said she needed to go to a bigger hospital.

The weather had turned fierce, ruling out a helicopter ride. Van Ersvelde then spent more than two hours in an ambulance as it crawled the 50 miles from Grinnell to Des Moines on Interstate 80 with snowplows escorting it the whole way.

Doctors at Mercy Medical Center halted her contractions, preventing a premature birth.
