OTTUMWA, IA -- It's getting colder across the heartland and soon fireplaces will be glowing.  Our Fact Finder team discovered some safety precautions you should take before lighting a fire.

If you're building a fire, make sure to burn dry wood not wet wood.  Make sure the chimney flue is clear of any debris or decorations so it vents properly.

Ottumwa firefighter Dave Yeager says clearing debris can make a difference.

“Chimney fires happen due to build up inside the chimney of creosote,” said Yeager.  “Then it causes a venting problem.” 

Christmas trees can be cause for a fire hazard around this time as well.  Place the tree in an open area and not in a corner.  If you own a real tree make sure to water it daily: the dryer a tree, the bigger the fire hazard.  The biggest concern however is faulty lighting.

“Make sure your light strands are in good condition.  Go through and inspect them to make sure.”
