LANCASTER, MO. -- Family, friends and colleagues gathered to say goodbye to longtime Schuyler County Sheriff Donnie Bruner Sunday.

Bruner was laid to rest at the Queen City cemetery in Queen City, Mo., following funeral services at Lancaster Christian Church. Bruner, 60, died late Wednesday night after suffering a heart attack.

Officers from law enforcement agencies across both Missouri and Iowa attended Sunday's funeral to pay their respects to a man who worked in the law enforcement field for more than 30 years. His coworkers say he will be greatly missed.

“As a friend we'll really miss him. And as the sheriff he was always there for somebody when you needed him. He was always willing to help out a colleague and all his workers. He was just a very nice person,” said Schuyler County Dispatcher Sharon Veatch.

Other colleagues told KTVO Bruner was a great civil servant who was very dedicated to the people of Schuyler County. He began working for the Schuyler County Sheriff's Office in 1977 and served as sheriff for 19 years.

Coworkers say his health had been failing for some time.
