JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- In-home care providers for the elderly and disabled in Missouri have voted overwhelmingly for union representation.

Results released Wednesday by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations show the unionization vote passed 2,729 to 499.

The results mean about 13,000 personal-care attendants now will be represented through collective bargaining by the new Missouri Home Care Union. The workers help people with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, cooking and cleaning.

The new union is a joint venture of the Service Employees International Union and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

The unionization effort was made possible by a ballot measure approved last year by Missouri voters.
