BETTENDORF, IOWA (AP) -- Transportation safety officials say two crew members have died in a freight train crash in Bettendorf in eastern Iowa.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway says a Dakota Minnesota & Eastern Railroad freight train struck a group of cars in a rail yard around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
An NTSB advisory issued Tuesday says two crew members were killed.
Railroad spokesman Mike Lovecchio says about a dozen cars derailed as a result of the accident. All the cars involved were empty.
Lovecchio says the railroad will investigate why the freight train traveling on the main line was diverted, striking stationary cars off to the side. He would not give a timeline for the investigation.
