This letter was released to the press by the Iowa State Senator Keith Kreiman (D-Bloomfield) and Iowa Representative Kurt Swaim (D-Bloomfield). It is address to U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa)
Dear Senator Harkin,
We are writing to ask you to support S 1304, the Automobile Dealers Economic Rights Restoration Act of 2009, which has been introduced by Senators Grassley, Kerry, and Brownback. The legislation restores the franchise agreements of dealerships let go during the American automakers’ bankruptcy proceedings. This bill was brought to our attention by our constituent Russ Mikels, who owns Mikels Chevrolet Buick Pontiac in Bloomfield, Iowa.
Mr. Mikels’ family has been selling and servicing cars in Bloomfield for fifty-seven years. It is a major contributor to the local economy. The national recession has already taken its toll on our community, as the recent temporary closure of the John Deere plant in nearby Ottumwa has left many residents unemployed. The Ford dealership in town closed one year ago, which makes Mr. Mikels’ dealership the last new car dealership in Bloomfield. Another closure will send a painful tremor through the community.
The dealership is respected in southeast Iowa for its honest and reliable service and employees. It also contributes to our local area and community in countless ways. As you know, in a small Iowa town like Bloomfield, the local dealership proudly employs and serves generations of residents.
All five of Iowa’s Congressmen have signed on to companion legislation, HR 2743. We understand that S 1304 was recently introduced, and that you are already heavily involved with many other important pieces of legislation. If you could please find time to review the legislation and assist in its passage, we would greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Senator Keith Kreiman
Representative Kurt Swaim
