KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A 14-year-old Life Scout all the way from Colorado is doing his Eagle Scout project in Kirksville.
On Wednesday, Eirik Kins from Bayfield, Colorado rounded up some help from local Boy Scout Troop 401 to weed flower beds along the Rotary International Centennial Energy Trail off south Osteopathy Street in Kirksville.
This project is "Plan B" for Eirik. He was unable to finish his original Eagle Project in Colorado because his grandmother, Ada Kins of Kirksville, passed away recently so he had to be away from home to attend the funeral.
Eirik also wanted to spend a couple of weeks in Kirksville with his Grandpa Verle so he wouldn't be so lonely following the loss of his wife.
So, Eirik decided to do his Eagle Project while staying in Kirksville.
Over the weekend, Eirik also built a raised flower bed with the help of a local landscaper, master gardeners and some Rotary Club members.
This flower bed is a memorial to his late grandmother.
Ada and Verle Kins helped plant other sections of the garden.
A Garden Party in celebration of Ada and Verle is set for 2 p.m. June 7 at the Energy Trail. The Kins’ daughter, Elsie Gaber of Kirksville, says the public is invited to attend to celebrate a life well lived.
