MACON, MO -- The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission Wednesday approved a contract to move forward with the north six-miles of the Alternate Route 63 project. The contract was awarded to C.J. Moyna and Sons Construction at a cost of $17.4 million.
The north six-miles between Route 6 north and Route 6 south were accelerated this spring with funding received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), about 18 months ahead of the original schedule.
"The entire Alternate Route 63 project is approximately 8.5 miles in length," said Project Manager Preston Kramer. "Plans for the six-mile section were finalized and met the criteria to receive ARRA funding, so we split the project into two segments so we could benefit from the ARRA funds and get the project started."
Work to complete the purchase of right of way and the design plans for the 2.5-mile south section is ongoing. A date to receive contractor bids will be set once the plans are finalized.
On or before completion of the first project in August 2011, the second project will begin. The entire 8.5 miles will be opened to traffic on or before 2012.
With the award of the project, it is possible that construction of the six-mile section could begin this year. This section should be open to traffic by August 2011.
