OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Iowa Workforce Development is sending a rapid response team to meet with workers on site at John Deere in Ottumwa after major layoffs were announced.

A spokeswoman for Workforce Development told KTVO this is classified as a very large layoff because almost 500 workers will be laid off.

Deere classifies the layoffs as “indefinite,” not “permanent,” so they weren’t legally required to inform anyone that the layoffs were coming down the pipeline.

Iowa Workforce Development says there is usually no severance pay offered in these situations, but unemployment will of course be available.

If you’ve been laid off and have questions, you can call the Iowa Workforce Development Office in Ottumwa at (641) 684-5401.
