KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- If you were driving down Highway 63 Wednesday morning, you may have noticed law enforcement vehicles and runners with a torch.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Missouri ran through Kirksville, Macon, and Moberly Wednesday.
The annual run involves more than 900 runners, 100 agencies, and over 1000 miles on 38 different routes.
“We certainly appreciate everyone's help who participated in the torch run today. We've always had a great turn out and hopefully next year will be the same way,” said Lynn McClamroch from the Missouri Conservation Department.
The run raises money for Special Olympics activities throughout the year.
In Kirksville, runners started at Jim Robertson's and ended at the dual lanes at the south end of town. Then the torch is driven to Macon and Moberly where similar runs take place.
The annual run began in 1986 and only one year was the race cancelled because of rain.
“I've been helping since 1986, I was living in Brookfield at the time when they first started the torch run and I've been a volunteer ever since and it goes for a great cause and I can tell you they certainly appreciate it,” said McClamroch.
