HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri landmark will be rededicated next month.

Workers have been rebuilding the foundation to the Tom and Huck statue at the foot of Cardiff Hill in Hannibal, Mark Twain's hometown. A rededication ceremony will be in late May, probably during Memorial Day weekend, though a specific date has not been set.

Mark Twain Museum Curator Henry Sweets says the new foundation is in place, but landscaping work still needs to be done. Work on the foundation began in January.

The foundation and the wall behind the statue were declared unsound in 2006. A barricade fence was erected to keep the public away from the problem areas.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Hannibal each year to  visit Mark Twain's boyhood home and other tourism sites.
