MARION, Iowa (AP) - Officials at an elementary school in Marion are notifying parents about a case of viral meningitis.

Officials sent notices home on Wednesday after a student at Echo Hill Elementary was diagnosed will the illness. Custodians have sanitized the school by wiping down desks, tables, light switches, door handles, and other items.

Meningitis is an infection of the fluid around the brain and spinal cord. It typically is caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms generally last from seven to 10 days and include fever, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting and/or a rash.
