OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Identity theft has become the number one crime in the United States. The threat of becoming a victim grows each day, and is anything but a joke.

As this crime grows, the methods identity thieves use are changing.

One of the newest mediums of identity theft is the text message.

Victims have received messages claiming to be their bank or credit union.

If you receive one of these messages, you should not reply.

Instead report the attempt to compromise your personal information to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at (888) 777-4590 or at www.IowaAttorneyGeneral.org.

You should also call your bank or credit union directly using their regular number to make them aware of the situation.
