KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) -- The first red-light safety cameras in Kansas City are being installed and will start operation next week.
Stan Harris, director of the city's Public Works Department, says a lot of drivers ignore traffic signals and the cameras are a
way to crack down on that behavior. The cameras will begin operating Thursday at the intersection of Southwest Trafficway and West 39th Street.
Vehicle owners caught during the initial 30-day period will be sent warnings by mail. The warning period will end, with more intersections added. The public will be notified before each intersection activation.
The city chose Southwest Trafficway and West 39th Street as the first intersection based on a study. It showed more than 150
motorists ran red lights there in an eight-hour period.
