KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Kirksville's Alternate Route 63 project gets the green light from the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.
The group unanimously approved the project at its meeting Friday in Kansas City.
Local reaction to the $28.5 million project is mixed.
Some are they're glad it will provide another way to get around town, while others fear the Alternate Route 63 will be bad news for Kirksville businesses.
"I think that with the bypass, economically, it would hurt us substantially," said Michael Shoush, a Kirksville resident.
"I don't go around Kirksville that much. I come to Kirksville, in town, so I probably won't use it a lot myself, but I'll use it when I go around,” said Duane Lawson, a Kirksville resident.
MoDOT says right-of-way purchases will get underway immediately.
Construction on Kirksville's new Alternate Route 63 is expected to get started in the fall of 2010.
