OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Election Day is just hours away, but that doesn't mean local political parties are slowing down.
From a phone call to a knock on the door, many Ottumwa residents received an early morning wake up call.
Wapello County Republican and Democratic Party volunteers campaigned in full force Monday starting very early in the morning.
Jack Pohrn dedicated his day to the Democratic Party.
"We're going to try to catch [residents] today or first thing this morning and encourage them to get out and vote, hopefully for the Democratic Party," Pohrn said.
David Mackenzie is volunteering in support of John McCain at the Republican Party headquarters in Ottumwa.
He recites a short speech every time someone answers his call.
"Hi my name is Dave, I’m a volunteer on behalf of the republican party of Iowa and wondering if we can count on your support for John McCain and Sarah Palin tomorrow?" Mackenzie
As the minutes count down, volunteers worked quickly. Republican volunteers at the phone bank had their hands full.
“Some of them are using two phones at once,” said Wapello County Republican Chair Trudy Caviness.
"Like Senator Obama said, we have to keep working every minute, every second, every hour up until people go into the polls," said Wapello County Democratic Party Secretary Judy Beisch.
Both parties had door knockers and phone banks going all throughout the day.
Volunteers even put fliers on doors around the city, but the main message the day before the election isn't so much on who to vote for, but just to get out and vote.
As the clocks tick on, volunteers will continue working as long as possible.
For them it's a sprint to the finish line and both parties hope for victory.
