DEFIANCE, OHIO (AP) -- John McCain is seizing on the latest report on oil company profits to make a new attack against Barack Obama.

Exxon Mobil today said it earned nearly $15 billion in the third quarter, shattering its own record for the biggest profit by a U.S. corporation.

Appearing at a rally in Defiance, Ohio, McCain told supporters that Obama's rhetoric masks a voting record of supporting new tax breaks for the industry.

McCain says he voted against those tax breaks and vows that when he's president, he's "not going to let that happen."

The Republican candidate's campaign aides are also reacting to a new Obama TV ad in which a motorist keeps seeing President Bush popping up in his mirrors as he passes highway signs pointing to McCain policies. McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds counters that Obama would drive a "sputtering economy off a cliff."
