MACON, MO -- A grant awarded to the Macon Public Library will help advance Missouri reading programs.

Secretary of State Jason Kander made an announcement this week, awarding the Macon Public Library with a grant in the amount of $5,436.

The grant will be used to offer summer reading programs to help educate, motivate and expand children's literacy.

"We're lucky Missouri has such a rich network of loacl public libraries though out the state," Kander said. "Strong local libraries provide Missourians access to new resources and information right in their own communities. With this federal grand funding, Macon Public Library will be able to provide Missourians with even better services and programs."

The Secretary of State's summer library program grants are funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S Institute of Museum and Library Services.

In the 2013 Fiscal Year, the Missouri State Library has approved a total of 47 grant applications, distributing $353,791 in federal awards to libraries throughout Missouri.
