KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign has been going on for decades across the country, including the Kirksville area.
The campaign started in the late 1800's and this year it celebrates it's 125th anniversary. The campaign started in San Francisco as Simpson's Pot, and has evolved into the Red Kettle Campaign they have now.
So far, the local Salvation Army has raised more than $18,000, which is less than their intended goal of $41,000.
Lt. Brian Bump with the Salvation Army tells us there is still time for people to donate money as they head inside the grocery store. He adds that the Kettle Campaign is not the only way people are able to donate.
"We always ask people if they can't donate financially, they can always donate their time," Bump said. "We have places available for people to come and ring the bell. We also have our Christmas basket distribution on December 19th they are more than welcome to come out and help us out with that. They can also donate a new unused toy for that distribution."
Bump tells KTVO the money and donations help at least 120 needy families in the Kirksville area.
There are several kettle locations around Kirksville where bell ringers are happy to take donations. The bell ringers are at locations like Hy-Vee, WalMart and many other stores every morning from 10-8 p.m.
The Kettle Campaign runs until noon Christmas Eve, so donate this holiday season to help make a difference in a family's life.
