OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The new communications tower in Wapello County will be located just west of the Ottumwa Central Fire Station.
The tower used to sit atop St. Joseph’s Hospital but had to be relocated because the former hospital is scheduled for demolition in the fall.
The Wapello County Supervisors approved the contract Tuesday evening to the lowest bidder, meaning the tower will be erect by January 30.
“Which was for about $297,000 paid for the 911 Board to erect a new tower on this site. We would have police, fire, a sheriff and also ormics on there. We'll have a total of about 18 devices on the tower,” said Jerry Parker, Wapello County Supervisor.
The total cost of the project will be $500,000.
Parker said the price is small price to pay as this will take care of the county’s communications needs for the next 50 to 60 years.
