BOONE COUNTY, IOWA -- Hunting is a popular sport in the Heartland. but if you like to hunt for pheasants, you might not see as many this year.
According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, population is down from last year.
The spring and summer floods have wrecked havoc across much of Iowa. That's why the wildlife workers and conservation officers carried out more than 200 upland games in August and as expected saw big drops in pheasants.
“With the 10th snowiest winter in 120 years and the first 6 months of the year being the wettest ever,” said DNR Upland Game Research Mark Macinroy. “Our pheasant numbers are down. 31 percent down from the year prior."
Iowa DNR Conservationists says that hunters may have to hunt longer or just expect to bag fewer birds this season. Pheasant season starts October 25.
