OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The snow we've seen so far this winter has meant quite a few snow days for students in the heartland.

For the Ottumwa School District, their policy means that each of those days missed are made up at the end of the school year.

Graduating seniors luck out;  they won't have to make up any days past graduation, which is always held on Memorial Day weekend.

Of course, students will never turn down a snow day, but how do the teachers feel about it?

"No one likes to venture out when the roads are slick and icy and things like that, so they're understanding that even if they have the feeling that 'gosh, I really want to get school in and not have to go late into June', they understand first priority is the safety of our students," said Ottumwa Superintendent Davis Eidahl. "We not only have to think about the safety of students getting on and off buses, but we have 15, 16 and 17-year-old students driving to school. They're novice drivers and we just want to ensure that they're going to be safe also."

Eidahl said the district has people out on the streets by 4 or 4:30 a.m. during inclemate weather, and they make the call whether or not to have school by 5 a.m.

And if you think students this year have seen a lot of snow days, Eidahl said one year, the district saw 10 and made every one of them up in June.
