Question: When is Eagle Days in Clarksville?

Answer: The Public Days are Saturday, January 26 from 9 am. – 4 p.m. and on Sunday, January 27 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m

Question: What activities are available for the public?

Answer: At the Apple Shed located at the south edge of Clarksville hosts a live eagle presentation by the World Bird Sanctuary every hour on the hour as well as the video, Where Eagles Soar, on the half hour.  Parts of this video were filmed in Clarksville.  In addition exhibits and displays and kid’s activities are available.  The building is not heated so dress warmly.

At the Riverfront Park spotting scopes are set up where MDC staff and volunteers help visitors to view the eagles. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains a bonfire to take the chill off.

Question: Where is Clarksville located?

Answer: From Kirksville drive south on 63 then head east to Hannibal.  Travel south on Hwy 61 south about 25-30 miles.  Take the exit for Hwy 54 towards Louisiana. Then south on 79 to Clarksville.  It’s about a 2 ½ hour drive from here, but well worth the time.

Question: How long has this event been occurring?

The event was first held in 1934.  In those days the eagle numbers were low and the coordinators went to great lengths to attract the eagles for the public to view.

Question: Why is Clarksville a good location for viewing bald eagles?

Answer: Clarksville is located by Lock and Dam #24 on the Mississippi River.  Even if the river is frozen above and below the dam, the current of the river keeps the water open churning up fish making for some easy pickings by the “eagle-eyed” bird.

Eagle Days are a great way to enjoy nature in the winter and also a fun way to spend time as a family.  Make sure to bundle up the family, for temperatures can be chilly, bring blankets, and don’t forget your camera and binoculars.
