KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Celebrating the accomplishments of students, hundreds of family members and friends gathered in Truman State University's Pershing Arena.

Around 300 students walked into the arena on Saturday to graduate from Truman with either their Bachelor's or Master degree.

The commencement address was given by Truman Alum and current Missouri Senator for the 15th district Eric Schmitt.

Schmitt told the students they live in a place where they have choices and where if you work hard enough you can achieve anything.

He said things are tougher now than they have been in a long time for people who are graduating, but (we) still live in an incredible place.

“The good news for you is that you are graduating from an institution of higher learning that has prepared you to meet those challenges,” Schmitt said.

“You were taught by (professors) in smaller classrooms…developing critical thinking skills…you have been trained not to know all of the answers or solutions, but the skills to find those answers and to seek those solutions.”

Three students graduated Valedictorian and three students received a standing ovation for graduating from the United States Army Reserve Officer Training Corps.

A reception was held in the hub at the Student Union following the graduation.
