MEMPHIS, MO -- Scotland County Hospital announces they were recently awarded a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health to establish a MED CLUB in the school districts of Schuyler, Scotland, Clark & Knox Counties.  The project is designed to address five main areas, which include: 1) Develop interest in healthcare careers at an early age, 2) Introduce diverse opportunities in healthcare, 3) Increased emphasis on math and sciences, 4) Open opportunities to our youth in careers allowing  them to make a good living in our rural area, and 5) Fill future voids as current healthcare workers retire.

On March 26th, 2012, from 9-11 AM, students from the four schools, Clark, Knox, Schuyler & Scotland Counties, met in the gym at Scotland County High School. The students were all members of a newly formed group, MED CLUB, designed to bring together students from surrounding counties towards a common goal of demonstrating to young people that setting goals early can lead to successful careers in the rural areas, they call home.

Several presenters were on hand to speak to 170 students about their healthcare related professions and the years of study and training that they have received to earn their titles. The presenters included: Dr. Thomae, Surgeon, Dr. Tobler, OB/GYN, Dr. Quenneville, ER Physician, Lois Quenneville, Physician Assistant, Carrie Hamner, Physical Therapist, Angela Hawes, Radiology Technician, Jessica Sevier, EMT/Paramedic, with a final presentation given by Maura Browning, of the Missouri Hospital Association.

Med Club meetings, field trips & symposiums are designed to increase emphasis on math and science, stressing their importance in preparation and pursuit of healthcare careers.  The Med Club symposium was organized by Kristin Hyde, Administrative Coordinator at Scotland County Hospital.
