KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Adair County Humane Society offered spay and neuter certificates.

Although there are an estimated 100 million cats and dogs kept by responsible and caring people in the United States, there is also a tragic number of these animals who suffer horrid cruelties associated with abandonment.

The Adair County Humane society is trying to help keep pets from being abandoned.

Bridget Thomas with the Adair County Humane Society tells us there are many people who car about animals.

"Today we're offering spade and neuter certificates for up to $50, so if somebody wants to spay or neuter their dog, but can't afford it, the local vets are offering discounted rates during the mont of march, so the $50 combined with that goes a long way," Thomas said.

Thomas says they have 140 certificates to give out. The certificates were paid by a grant and by donations from local individuals.

If you missed it Saturday's distribution, they'll also be handing out certificates Thursday, February 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Adair County Health Department.
