KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- With the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn., many, especially children are having a tough time getting into the holiday spirit.
Children may be confused or frightened, but Angela Caraway, the Clinical Director at Mark Twain Behavioral Health tells us you should focus on providing emotional support to your children.
“A lot of times kids just need to be reassured that they're safe that there are people looking out for them and planning for events that could potentially happen to make sure that they are safe. I think it's important to look at their age and talk with them about their feelings or emotions about what has happened.”
Caraway said it's common for kids to become anxious and scared after events like this.
She adds that parents should focus on the heroes of the story and try to avoid revisiting the tragedy.
