UNIONVILLE, MO. -- A gas drive-off in Centerville, Iowa Friday afternoon turned into a high-speed chase that ended with a crash in Unionville, Missouri.

A clerk at Konvenience Korner convenience store in Centerville told KTVO that a young man put $70.03 worth of gas into a red Dodge Durango with Illinois license plates and then drove off without paying for it.

That was around 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Putnam County Sheriff Jason Knight confirmed for KTVO that the SUV was stolen out of Illinois.

The store reported the gas theft to the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office.

A deputy was then able to locate the SUV and began pursuit.

The chase reached speeds of 100 miles per hour through Appanoose County and into Putnam County.

The Unionville Police Department told KTVO the chase ended with the Durango crashing near the intersection of Birch and 23rd on the south side of Unionville.

The SUV came to rest on the driver's side.

Knight said Friday evening that the driver was taken to the hospital to be evaluated and treated for minor injuries.

The suspect's next stop was jail.

Knight said a total of three patrol vehicles were damaged during Friday afternoon's ordeal.

The sheriff told KTVO the suspect is an 18-year-old Hispanic male from Rochelle, Illinois.

His name is being withheld pending the filing of formal charges.

Knight said the suspect will likely face a laundry list of felony charges in Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.
