KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Forest Lake Area Trail System (FLATS) is one step closer to phase one of a new project.

Thursday, the FLATS Committe received a shipment of steel that will help make the new pedestrian trail and will create all amenities at the state park handicapped acessible. Dan Martin with the FLATS Committe said he's pleased with local companies helping in the efforts.

He tells us they will be working with the Department of Natural Reousrces to build the first pediestrian bridge that will run along the lake at Thousand Hills State Park.

"Luckily for us Midwest Machining, right here in Kirksville was one of many bidders. They were the low bid and its wonderful to be able to work with community businesses to provide right here in our city," Martin said.

There is still no set date for the official ground breaking, but they are planning a pre construction meeting in the next week or so.

Phase one should be completed no later than spring of 2013.

They're hoping the project will help connect the city of Kirksville to Thousand Hills State Park.
