OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Members from both Indian Hills Community College and the University of Iowa signed an articulation agreement Thursday for the Engineering program at the University of Iowa.

The agreement says that beginning in the fall of 2013, students working towards an engineering degree can begin working on a Bachelor of Science Degree starting at Indian Hills Community College.

Leaders from both Indian Hills Community College and the University of Iowa told KTVO that they were very excited and pleased with this agreement.

"To be able to get a number of their (the students) courses right here at Indian Hills before they move on to the university, without any kind of glitch; knowing that is going to be a smooth transition from Indian Hills to the University of Iowa Engineering Program," said Dr. Marlene Sprouse, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Indian Hills Community College.

"I think it means more opportunities for students to get what they want to obtain; and this will allow them to work or stay home, or get the education they need in a smaller classroom environment and then transition seamlessly over to the University of Iowa into classes of the same size. So, smaller classes versus the larger 300 size classes, they would be able to get in to maybe a 30 size classroom here," said Megan Allen with the University of Iowa.

"I worked in engineering for quite a number of years before I got my Ph.D. in Environmental Science, and I am really excited to bring more of my engineering background in, and I think it was a really nice fit with environmental science these days. The solutions we have to find with the environmental problems, it fits right in with the engineering charters in my opinion. So, I am looking forward to getting into the more mathematical and theoretical aspects of this," said Dr. Gilbert Nebgen, Associate Professor of Science and Mathematics.

Indian Hills Community College and the University of Iowa College of Engineering have set up a college transfer guide to show students what courses they need to take at Indian Hills in order to fulfill those requirements at the University of Iowa.

Students interested in this new program should contact an advisor at Indian Hills Community College.
