KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A northeast Missouri college student is in trouble with the law, accused of forging documents that were supposedly from a doctor verifying that she has cancer, when in fact, she does not have the disease.

At this point in the investigation, Victoria "Tory" Marut, 22, of Kirksville is charged with one felony count of forgery.

The suspect is a Truman State University student enrolled in the Master's of Education Program.

She had been doing an internship at Kirksville Primary School for the current semester.

Teachers in the district told KTVO Marut duped many of the teachers and staff with her fake cancer story.

They said Marut had even shaved her head and her eyebrows to make it look like she was undergoing chemotherapy.

Many staffers had given Marut cash because they felt sorry for her.

We're told someone even gave her a $700 wig.

Court documents state that, when confronted, Marut told investigators she did not have cancer and was not undergoing treatment.

Chief Tom Johnson with the Truman State University Police Department said more charges against Marut are possible.

He said they are still trying to sort out the intricate details of Marut’s scam.

Marut is being held in the Adair County Jail on $25,000 cash only bond.

No one seems to know why Marut claimed to have cancer.
