KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- It's the first snowfall in the Heartland this year, and it proved to be a day of fun for some and a lot of work for others.

Public Works director, John Buckwalter says they have been plowing and maintaining the streets continuously.

"If you look around the downtown area there is no place to put snow. We can't put snow to the side because we'll fill either the parking spaces or sidewalks," Buckwalter said.

Buckwalter says the snow mountains helps open the downtown streets and parking areas for drivers and patrons. He says the most efficient way is to basically come in and windroll the the snow, and then push it into a mountain of snow in the intersection.

The snow storm definitely blasted the Heartland, and is now to the Northeast--leaving behind mountains of snow for city crews and residents to dig out.

But the digging out didn't stop many Kirksville kids from in enjoying their snow day. Dozens of people turned Rotary Park into a sledding hill.

Dan Hamlet, a father that brought his kids to the park tells us the whole family had a blast.

"Having a great time! Any chance we get to take the kids out to go sledding is a good thing," Hamlet said.

And even though it wasn't a snow day for KTVO's Justin Andrews, he had to join in the snowball fight. When we asked Shane, one of Justin's opponents, who won the snowball fight, he tells us they (the kids) did.

Justin claims he was outnumbered and so were the snow mountains with city crews working the around the clock.

City workers tell us they started preparing for the storm immediately-- when they heard our weather team forecasting it.

While the crews work to make sure the roads are safe, local kids will be taking the slopes all weekend long.
