KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A survey of downtown property owners didn't prove as helpful to a Kirksville city commission as members had hoped it would.

At Wednesday evening's Kirksville Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, the results of a recent survey of downtown property owners regarding a proposed downtown design and review ordinance was released, and it's results are not exactly what the committee was hoping for.

Out of the 134 surveys sent out, only 38 were returned.

Of those 38, half support and half are opposed to an ordinance that would regulate the construction of new buildings only in the downtown district.

City leaders say the tie vote doesn't give officials the guidance they were hoping to gain from the survey.

The commission voted to let the Kirksville City Council now decide if the proposed ordinance is even worth pursuing since half of the survey respondents said yes and half said no.
