OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The nearly 50 degree weather on Tuesday had many thinking of spring.

However, the warm front is not expected to last. The forecast is calling for snow accumulation in southeast Iowa and Ottumwa Public Works crews were hard at work all day preparing for the snow.

At least 300 tons of sand will have been laid on streets by the end of Tuesday.

Ottumwa Public Works Superintendent Steve Edgington said once it starts snowing and there’s enough accumulation, crews will hit the streets with snow plows.

“It sure is nice that the weather is nice. I mean, we're not out there plowing snow today which is a good thing. It gives us a break. We've got all the trucks cleaned out from the ice the other day so we're hauling sand in. This afternoon we'll be getting the trucks and spinners back on the trucks and everything ready for snow tonight or early in the morning,” said Edgington.

He said the Public Works Department is always prepared for inclement weather and has enough sand on hand to take on whatever the weather has throw at us.
