FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- The city of Fairfield is looking for groups and businesses to help raise funds for the community's new pool and gym.

On election day, voters in Jefferson County chose to approve plans for an expanded rec center. The current plan is to add on to the existing Roosevelt Recreation Center, as well as build a new pool on Fillmore Street just outside of town.

Fundraising has already begun and several local businesses have pledged support. The project has a task force out to gather even more support, but the fact that the measure passed so overwhelmingly is a sign that residents are excited about the project.

"What I think it means is that people want these amenities, they want healthy alternatives to do, they want events and places to go that people are coming to Fairfield, not going to other cities," said Derik Wulfekuhle, Director of Parks and Recreation. "We can have them here."

The project is scheduled to break ground in April, and Wulfekuhle said they hope to have 95% of the funds raised by then.

The project should be completed in 2014.
