KIRKSVILLE, MO -- A popular Heartland attraction is cutting back to stay in budget.

At Tuesday's monthly meeting of the Kirksville Parks, Lakes, and Recreation Committee, members discussed the possibility of cutting the hours of operation at the Aquatic Center in Rotary Park.

One option was for the center to be closed on Mondays; the other was for the center to open every day at 1 p.m. instead of noon beginning this summer.

Members voted unanimously to recommend that the center open at 1 p.m. daily.

"One hour won't make it that big of a difference as long as you are familiar on what the hours are, you can plan accordingly. Most days in the summer, a lot of folks don't usually show up until 1 p.m. So this really won't be a big adjustment for most of the community," said Kirksville Assistant City Manager Melanie Smith.

If approved by the city council, the changed schedule will take effect Memorial Day weekend, when the outdoor pool opens for the summer season.
