OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office has given over $5,000 worth of smoke alarms to the Ottumwa Fire Department.

The state received a grant for the detectors, which they distributed to departments throughout the state. The goal, to have a working smoke alarm in every single home in the state of Iowa.

“With this program, they are going to do a study on exactly where these smoke detectors go. So, we as firefighters will come out and install these, and then we can keep track of who has them and what good they have done,” said Chief Tony Miller of the Ottumwa Fire Department.

Residents throughout the City of Ottumwa that do not have a working smoke alarm are asked to call the Ottumwa Fire Department.

“They need to call the fire department and say, here’s the situation, we need a smoke detector. We will call them back and schedule a day that we can come out and install it. And, if they need two detectors, we will install two detectors,” Miller said.

Miller added that he wants to see a working smoke detector in every home in Ottumwa, as well as a fire extinguisher.

The department is in the process of getting grants for more detectors and extinguishers.
