CAIRO, MO. -- An overnight fire has heavily damaged a senior housing complex.

The fire broke out around 12:30 Friday morning at a senior citizens apartment complex in Cairo, Missouri in the northern part of Randolph County.

Cairo Fire Chief Harold Muehe says a resident woke up to smoke and flames and called 911.

Highway patrol troopers were able to rescue the 5 residents out of the burning building. Thirty area firefighters were on the scene throughout the night.

Muehe says pumps and hydrants were freezing in the single digit temperature as they battled the blaze.

The four senior apartments are considered a total loss. One couple fell on their way out of the building and they were treated at Moberly Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

The residents are staying with relatives and friends and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
