DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Lawmakers in the state House are set to debate a scaled-back version of Gov. Terry Branstad's education reform plan.

Debate on the legislation was scheduled for Tuesday. Last week, Republicans in the House education committee approved a plan to water down Branstad's proposal. The revised proposal lets schools opt-out of Branstad's proposed minimum salary increases and leadership bonuses.

Branstad wanted to mandate that minimum teacher salaries go from $28,000 to $35,000. Under the House Republican proposal, the salary increases would be to $32,000 for districts that participate in the reform plan.
