OTTUMWA, IOWA -- It is often considered a national holiday and it’s less than a week away: the Super Bowl!

And with that come all the delicious food and drinks which typically means a lot of extra calories.

However, South Ottumwa Hy-Vee dietician Heather Ware said you can still have your cake and eat it too; or in this case, you can still have your dips and eat them too.

And salsa is a healthy alternative for dip fans.

“Again just start out with a can of no salt added tomatoes --  because canned salsas do have a lot of sodium -- so you're saving this way, chop those up, some canned black beans I drained, frozen sweet corn, cilantro, garlic, a little bit of jalapeños. I threw it all together and stuck it in the fridge overnight. It was ready to go,” said Ware.

Ware said you can still have your favorite hot wings at your Super Bowl party but to have those healthier options available for guests, as well.

When it comes to alcoholic drinks, Ware suggested choosing a light beer and alternating a glass of water or zero calorie drink in between each alcoholic beverage to reduce the amount of calories consumed.
