FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- People from all different age groups gathered in Jefferson County Park Sunday to learn how to make homemade baskets.

The Jefferson County Conservation Department put the program together; and those that participated in the class had an opportunity to be apart of something that has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

“What is really cool about doing a basket class is that once people have made a basket, they have connected themselves to every culture and every country in the world. The reason is, every culture has baskets in its history and in some countries and cultures, they still continue to make baskets on a daily basis,” said Therese Cummiskey, who is the Naturalist for the Jefferson County Conservation Board.

Cummiskey added that the class offered on Sunday was a beginners course and that she does offer advanced courses to those who are interested.
