OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Most of us have experienced dry skin during the winter months and it is especially important for the elderly to take care of their skin.
According to those at Seneca Area Agency on Aging, as you age, your skin gets dryer and thinner making it more prone to skin rashes.
And the answer is more moisturizer such as heavy creams or Vaseline. One of the tips Seneca gives is after you smear your hands, feet or elbows with cream, try to get a covering on it so that way it will help absorb the moisture in it.
“So you definitely need moisturizer -- so a humidifier in the home is also important to help bring that moisture back into the home and sometimes we don't think about it even if we wash our hands in hot water or take a shower, that you do need to moisturize because that takes the moisture out of your skin,” said Joan Nydle, Seneca Area Agency on Aging.
If you do start to notice cracking and bleeding of the skin, you should contact your doctor.
