OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Ottumwa Fire Department received a grant check that will help continue fire prevention efforts in Ottumwa.

FM Global, an insurance company out of St. Louis, receives requests from organizations and departments across the country who have fire prevention programs. A board reviews each of the requests and one was granted to the OFD.

"We have a fire protection grant program where we work with different communities to help them raise funding for small projects," said Brian Eagleton, of FM Global. "So we're very happy to support the city of Ottumwa, the fire department and their grant program here."

The $2,000 check was presented at the Main Fire Station Tuesday to Deputy Fire Chief Cory Benge and the money was used to purchase a new outfit for Sparky, the department's mascot for fire safety and prevention.

This is the first time that FM Global has partnered with the Ottumwa Fire Department for a grant.
