KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Do you have a great idea on how the community can reduce what goes into the landfill?

The Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District, Region C is taking proposals for its grant fund.

Eligible projects for the grant are waste reduction, research and development, recycling, market development, energy recovery and educational/informational.

Some of the past recipients who have received the grant have turned vegetable oil into diesel, made playground equipment from recycled material, created elementary school educational programs and created household hazardous waste facilities among other things.

An applicant can apply for more than one grant...with the maximum amount being $50,000.

“Basically anybody can apply,” Solid Waste Coordinator Sue Morton said. “It can be county, city, not for profit, private individuals if they have a really good business idea (and business plan). Anything that anybody has an idea for that has to do with reducing what goes into the landfill we like to hear from them.”

You can get an application at the NEMO Regional Planning Commission at 326 E. Jefferson, P.O. BOX 248, Memphis, Missouri, or by calling Sue Morton at (660) 465-7281.

The deadline for submitting applications is 3 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2013.
