OTTUMWA, IOWA -- So far, the Midwest has been lucky with a relatively mild November and December, but you may want to start thinking about winterizing your home in time for snow and ice.

Experts say there are a few tips and tricks to help you save both money and energy during the winter season.

Be sure your attic is well insulated, as attics can account for nearly 80% of heat and energy loss in homes. Cover up the cracks at the bottom of your doors to make sure no heat gets out or no cold air gets in, and insulate your windows with caulk or plastic.

"A newer window, you're probably going to want to go with caulking around the outside, on the inside, there's not much you can do there if it's a newer window," said Kory Clossen, Construction Sales Supervisor at Christner Contracting in Ottumwa. "On your older style wooden windows, plastic on the outside or inside is good."

Clossen said attic insulation can last up to 20 years, but you should reinsulate your windows each winter.

It is also suggested to change your light bulbs to florescent lights, which is a big money saver.
