OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Saturday is National Adoption Day and the American Home Finding Association and the Eighth Judicial District want to raise awareness of adoption in the United States.
To celebrate the day on Saturday, a special ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Wapello County Courthouse. Six families will welcome new additions to their families.
"What we try to get out there is the fact that at any one time, there's over 129,000 kids in the United States alone that could be adopted by a family and I think a lot of times - they're not all babies, but they're of all ages, birth to 18, that need loving parents and a home and a family," said Holly Dommer, of American Home Finding Association. "We try to get that across to everyone that you don't always have to think international when you think adoption."
Aprile Goodman of CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, will be the guest speaker Saturday and the public is welcome to attend.
Dommer said National Adoption Day is her favorite day of the year, as it is all about having fun and celebrating families.
